Palette Poetry

Palette Poetry publishes poems from writers at all stages of their careers, They especially encourage emerging poets to submit. Send up to 5 poems. Payment: $50/poem, up to $150. Submission period: Rolling submissions.

Frontier Poetry

Submissions for Frontier Poetry's New Voices poetry category are open year round to any new and emerging poet who has not published more than one full-length collection of poetry. New Voices are published online only and will feature a number of poems from new authors each month. Payment: $50/poem, up to $150. Submission period: Rolling submissions.

Poetry London is a leading international magazine, where new names share pages with acclaimed contemporary poets. They also publish a wide range of poetry in translation. Poetry London publishes reviews of around seventy or eighty titles a year. They concentrate on single author collections of poetry in English or translated into English, including some pamphlets and chapbooks. In addition, there are occasional reviews of significant anthologies or relevant critical writing. Payment: £35. Submission period: Rolling submissions.

Cōnfingō 

Cōnfingō  Magazine publishes new short fiction, poetry and art from around the world in a print-only magazine. Poems (maximum of three) should be no longer than 50 lines. Payment: £50.

Rattle 

Rattle publishes poetry, translations, and book reviews. Rattle also publishes a weekly online poem relating to current event called Poets Respond. The deadline for each week is Friday at midnight PST. The poems must respond to news that occurred in the previous week, and have been written in the time since. Payment: $100.

Poetry Online 

Poetry Onlne has no strict poetry style or theme. They accept both poetry and visual poetry, traditional and experimental. Payment: $60.

Poet Lore

Poet Lore is a biannual print journal of poetry. They publish both established and emerging poets. They also welcome all types of poems, including long poems and sequences. Send up to 5 poems. They also accept translations. Payment: $50/poem.

Epoch Magazine is edited by faculty at Cornell University. Genres: Poetry in all forms, including the long poem; send up to five poems, fiction, essays, cartoons, screenplays, graphic art, and graphic fiction. Payment: $100 - $500. Snail mail submissions are free. Charges $3 for online submissions. See reading periods.

The Massachusetts Review. Genre: Poetry up to 100 lines. Submit up to six poems. Also fiction and essays. No fee for mailed submissions. Payment: $100 for work published in a single issue. See reading periods.

The Georgia Review. Genre: Submit up to five poems, fiction, nonfiction, and reviews. No fee for mailed submissions. Payment: $4 per line of poetry, and $50 per page for prose. Snail mail submissions are free. Charges $3 for online submissions. See reading periods.

Bennington Review. Genre: Poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, film writing, and cross-genre work. Payment: $120 for prose of six pages and under, $250 for prose of over six pages, and $25 per poem, in addition to two copies of the issue the piece is published in. See submission periods.

Grain Literary Magazine is a Canadian publication. Genres: Individual poems, sequences, or suites up to a maximum of 6 pages, fiction, literary nonfiction. Payment: CAD $50 per page up to CAD $250. Reading Period: They have a monthly Submittable cap. If they reached the cap, online submissions will be closed until the following month. No submission fee for Canadians only.

Baltimore Review. Genre: Poetry; send up to three poems, fiction, creative nonfiction, videos (including poetry), and cross-genre work. Payment: $40. Reading Period: Submission periods vary.

Highlights Magazine is a magazine for children ages 6-12. Genre: Poems up to 10 lines, especially non-rhyming and/or humorous poetry. No poems with nature or seasonal themes or poems about dogs. Also publish short stories (see guidelines for current themes), puzzles, articles, activities, and cartoons. Payment: $40 and up for poems, crafts, and puzzles, and $175 and up for fiction and nonfiction. Contemporary Verse 2. Genre: Poetry and critical writing about poetry, including interviews, articles, essays, and reviews. Payment: $30 - $150. No submission fee for Canadians only.

Mslexia. Genre: Stories, poems and script on themes. Length: Stories up to 2,200 words, poems up to 40 lines, and short scripts up to 1,000 words (including character names and stage instructions).  Payment: £25. Reading Period: See site for deadlines.

Westerly. Genre: Short stories, poetry, memoir and creative non-fiction, essays and literary criticism. Payment: Poems: $250 for one poem or $300 for a poetic sequence; Prose (including scholarly work): $500; Visual art/photo essays/comics: $620. Online Publication (including reviews): $250. While we will accept submissions from non-subscribers, should your work be accepted for publication in this instance, you will be asked to accept a subscription to the Magazine as part payment for your work." Poetry Magazine. Poetry magazine has been in continuous publication for more than 100 years, making it the oldest monthly magazine devoted to verse in the English language. Payment:Text poems: $10/line with a minimum payment of $400 per poem. Visual poems: $400 per poem. Video poems: $600 per poem. Prose: $250 per published page. All rights will revert to the author upon publication. Payment: $50 for essays (including book reviews and Artists on Craft pieces); $50 for fiction (short stories and flash fiction); $35 for the first poem accepted, and $10 for each additional accepted in the same submission; $20 for each photo accepted.

Star*Line is the official newsletter of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Poetry Association. Genre: Speculative poetry (including science fiction, fantasy, and horror), interviews, articles, and reviews. Submit up to five poems, or short articles on topics related to science fiction, fantasy, and horror speculative poetry. Payment: 5¢ per word for poems, with a minimum of $5 and maximum of $25.

Glintmoon exclusively publishes poems of ten (10) lines or fewer. "We will consider any and all poetry that follows this one rule. However, it must be said that we are not partial to traditional forms, such as the haiku or the tanka, nor do we particularly enjoy rhymed or metred work." Payment: $5.

Frontier Poetry: New Voices. Submissions are open to new and emerging poets only (no more than one full-length published work forthcoming at the time of submission.) Payment: $50 per poem, up to $150.

Through the Gate. "We are looking for fantastical poetry of literary and emotional depth from a diversity of voices and perspectives. Our definition of fantastical is quite fluid, encompassing fantasy, magic realism, myth, folklore, surrealism and slipstream. We desire poetry that is atypically beautiful, unconventionally imaginative, and boundary-crossing. We are not interested in work that is strictly science fiction or mainstream, but poetry that blurs the lines between such genres and the fantastical is welcome." Payment: $20 (USD) per unpublished poem by PayPal.

Palette Poetry. "Submissions for our Featured Poetry category are open year round to poets at any stage of their career. Featured Poems are published online only and will spotlight a number of poems from new authors each month. We highly encourage emerging authors to submit." Payment: $50 per poem, up to $150.

Guernica is a magazine of global arts and politics. Payment: Not specified.

Poetry Ireland Review is published three times annually. "We welcome unsolicited submissions of poems, and proposals for articles and reviews, from Ireland and abroad, in Irish or English. We actively encourage submissions from women and people from diverse ethnic backgrounds, who are currently under-represented in the submissions we receive throughout the year." Payment: €50.

Blue Unicorn is known for welcoming formal verse, and this welcome continues. "We’re impressed by poems that read as though the poet had simply thought in the form, without forced rhymes, weak words inserted to satisfy the meter, and the like. Every formal writer knows how much effort goes into seeming effortlessness." Payment: Not specified.

Only Poems. "We love prose poems, traditional forms (ghazals, villanelles, sestinas), love poems, sex poems, and experimental questionnaires, but we are not married to a style or genre. We are welcoming of anything you think is your most exciting work. Ultimately, we want poems that move us or make us go: “God, I wish I had written this!” Payment: $77. Only Poems also runs a monthly Poem of the Month contest $33. Short Poems, Ekphrasis $22.

The Lit Fox Poetry Series publishes one exceptional poem per quarter. The selected poem will be their top featured poem three months. Send up to 5 poems. Payment: $150.

Josephine Quarterly accepts only unpublished poetry and art. Payment: $30.

If you write poetry, getting published is usually not a problem. The difficulty is getting paid. There are countless venues for poems that pay nothing, or that pay a modest fee.

Do not despair, poets! Many magazines are more than willing to pay you more than it would cost to buy a cup of coffee.

Here are 20 noteworthy publications that pay in the professional or semi-professional range for poetry. Most of these also accept fiction and creative nonfiction, and many are more than happy to nominate accepted poems for prizes.

Poetry is a highly prestigious publication, and therefore has a high rejection rate. But do not be afraid to give it a whirl. (The worst that can happen is that they will cut your head off and stick it on a pole as a warning to other poets.) The Kenyon Review

This is another long-standing publication with a great reputation. In addition to poetry, they publish fiction, plays and creative nonfiction. Payment: Professional rate. See reading period.

The Atlantic

The Atlantic is a highly prestigious magazine founded in 1857 as The Atlantic Monthly in Boston,  They always interested in great nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. Payment: Professional rates. To submit poetry, send your manuscript to: poetry@theatlantic.com.

Blackbird

Founded in 2002 as a joint venture of the Virginia Commonwealth University Department of English and New Virginia Review, Inc., Blackbird publishes poetry, plays, fiction, and CNF. Payment: $40. See reading period.

The Baltimore Review

The Baltimore Review is a nationally distributed journal founded in 1996. In addition to poetry, they publish fiction and CNF. Payment: $50. See reading period.

carte blanche 

"Our mandate is to provide a venue for narrative of all forms from fiction and nonfiction, to poetry and photo essays." Payment: $75. See reading period.

The Cincinnati Review

The Cincinnati Review is put out by the University of Cincinnati. They also accept fiction and nonfiction. Payment: $40/page for poetry. See reading period.

Event

"We love poems that are lyrical without being overwrought, and are profound without being pretentious. We look for honesty of emotion, and images that arrest us." Event also accepts fiction. Payment:  $40/page, up to a maximum of $500, along with two copies of the issue. See submission periods.

The Fiddlehead

The Fiddlehead is open to good writing in English or translations into English from all over the world and in a variety of styles, including experimental genres. "Our editors are always happy to see new unsolicited works in fiction, including excerpts from novels, creative nonfiction, and poetry. We particularly welcome submissions from Indigenous writers, writers of colour, writers with disabilities, LGBTQQIA+ writers, and writers from other intersectional and under-represented communities." The Christian Science Monitor: The Home Forum

"Poetry that appears in The Home Forum explores and celebrates life. It provides a respite from the bleakness that appears in so much contemporary verse. We are particularly interested in poetry that has an international flavor or that offers some global or cultural insights. Short poems are more likely to be accepted (because of space constraints) than poems that are more than 18 lines long. We do not publish work that presents people in helpless or hopeless states. Nor do we print poetry about death, aging, and illness, or anything dark, violent, sensual or overtly religious." Payment: $200 - $250.

Strange Horizons 

Strange Horizons publishes speculative fiction and poetry. "We're looking for modern, exciting poems that explore the possible and impossible: stories about human and nonhuman experiences, dreams and reality, past and future, the here-and-now and otherwhere-and-elsewhen. We want poems from imaginative and unconventional writers; we want voices from diverse perspectives and backgrounds." Payment: $50. 

Ploughshares

Published by Emerson College, Ploughshares is a highly prestigious journal whose authors regularly win prizes. Payment: $45/printed page, $90 minimum per title, $450 maximum per author. There is a fee to submit online, but snail mail is free. See reading period. Note: Charges $3.75 for online submissions.

The Ex-Puritan

This Canadian literary magazine publishes fiction, interviews, essays, reviews and poetry from all over the world. Payment: $50 per poem or $100 per poet if multiple poems are accepted.

Southern Indiana Review

The Southern Indiana Review is put out by the University of Southern Indiana. In addition to poetry, they publish fiction, creative nonfiction, and drama. From the poetry editor: "I like poems with tension and poise, both. Free or formal verse. Poems that risk sentimentality in favor of genuine connection. I’m looking for work that moves, transports; pieces that make me laugh, cry, nod my head in silent recognition. I badly want work that teaches me something new." Payment: $75 (five layout pages or fewer accepted for publication) and $150 (six layout pages or more accepted). See reading period.

The Southern Review

The Southern Review publishes fiction and poetry. Poetry submissions are by snail mail only. Payment: $25 per printed page with a maximum payment of $200. Josephine Quarterly

"Josephine Quarterly is an online literary magazine celebrating the resilience and voices of underrepresented poets. Poetry Online is a poetry journal committed to publishing work made accessible to all. "We offer an online venue to share poems alongside audio, captioned video, and screenreader accessible images, so every reader is included." Accepts reprints. Payment: $60.

I have a special fondness for Canadian literary magazines. They usually pay their writers, don't ask for "perpetual rights," and for the most part do not charge submission fees. In addition, Canada has a deep respect for literature and literacy. It is an honor to be published in one of their literary journals.

All of these magazines are paying markets. The majority accept non-Canadian writers. English is the preferred language, but sometimes French is accepted as well. I have indicated which magazines have submission periods. (Read their guidelines carefully.)

The American Gardener

"The American Gardener is the official publication of the American Horticultural Society. The 64-page, four-color magazine goes out bimonthly to nearly 20,000 members. We stress environmentally responsible gardening practices, including minimizing use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, preventing illegal collection of plants from the wild, and avoiding plants with the potential to escape and damage natural ecosystems."

There is nothing quite like having your work published, especially after you have spent months sending your stories or poems to magazines that take forever to respond.

Sadly, the elation you feel when you have finally seen your work in print may be short-lived. Most stories and poems that make their way into literary journals have only a brief shelf-life. After readers have read your work and the issue has been archived, now what?

One good way to extend the life of your work is to send it to literary magazines that accept reprints.

Fortunately, there are a lot of literary magazines willing to accept work that has already been published. Very few of them pay, because reprints have little value in the literary marketplace. (Only the first magazine that publishes your work will be credited.) However, some venues, notably podcasts, pay competitive rates for work that has been previously published.

All of these publications accept reprints. Make sure you read their websites carefully to see if your work will be a good fit. And make sure that all rights have reverted to you when you submit to them. (Look at the contract you signed with the original publisher. It should say "All rights revert to author upon publication" or "All rights revert to author after X months.")
