Kate Barker Literary Agency (UK)

I have worked in publishing for nearly twenty years as an agent, commissioning editor and ghostwriter. I spent ten years at Penguin, where I was an Editorial Director for Viking, acquiring fiction and non-fiction. I have also worked for Orion, for one of the biggest literary agencies in the UK, for digital publisher Bookouture and for a speakers bureau. I work with a wide range of specialist agencies for the sale of rights around the world.

What she is seeking:

Fiction

I’m looking for commercial and reading group novels: my taste in fiction is broad. I like strong stories, interesting settings (contemporary or historical) and high concept novels. Please note that I do not represent science fiction, fantasy or books for children. Work in those genres will not be read.

Non-fiction

I’m looking for smart thinking, history, memoir, popular psychology and science, natural history, lifestyle and wellbeing. Big ideas and subjects that get people talking. I particularly enjoy helping experts translate their work for a general audience.
